In fact, there are subtle but not insignificant differences in skin texture between the female and male sex:
Men’s facial skin is around 20% thicker than women’s skin and contains more collagen, which makes it particularly dense and firm to the touch.
Although the age-related breakdown of collagen starts earlier, it develops continuously and less abruptly than in women. Furthermore, men’s skin produces more sebum (oil from the sebaceous glands), the synthesis of which is dependent on the sex hormone testosterone. Men’s pores are also larger than women’s, which means that the stored water is released to the outside more quickly (known as transepidermal water loss). Forehead wrinkles, for example, form earlier than in women.
Even though awareness of skin care is on the rise, there are still very few people who take adequate care of their skin. Many men often develop an awareness of our largest organ late in life. By then, UV-related damage and general neglect of the skin have already contributed to the aging process.
The loss of hair is a particularly sensitive issue: alopecia.
Even if it is not exclusive to men, it affects a large proportion of men from a certain age and is therefore also known as “androgenetic alopecia” (andros Gr. – man; genetic – the cause lies in genetics).
