Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum . There are different types of botulinum toxin, with type A and type B being the most commonly used in medical and cosmetic applications. Botulinum toxin A, better known as Botox®, is used in aesthetic medicine primarily to reduce facial wrinkles and lines. However, it can lead to a reduction in muscle tension .

HOW BOTULINUM TOXIN (BOTOX®) WORKS
The muscles responsible for wrinkle formation are temporarily paralyzed. Botulinum toxin is a so-called “neurotoxin”. It inhibits the nerve endings whose activity is responsible for muscle tension or wrinkles through the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. By inhibiting muscle contraction, botulinum toxin smoothes wrinkles and lines on the surface of the skin. The effect is temporary and lasts for several months. After this, muscle activity gradually returns and repeated injections are required to maintain the desired results.
The doses are so low that – contrary to what the name suggests – it is not “toxic”, i.e. poisonous, but merely relaxes the muscles in the treated area. Frequently treated areas include the forehead, glabellar lines (between the eyebrows), crow’s feet (around the eyes) and the neck.
ADVANTAGES OF BOTULINUM TOXIN
- Reduction of wrinkles: Botulinum toxin effectively reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.
- Non-invasive: Unlike surgical procedures, botulinum toxin injections are minimally invasive and require no incisions or downtime.
- Fast procedure: Treatments are usually quick, with most sessions lasting less than 30 minutes.
- Minimal discomfort: The injections are nearly pain-free and the discomfort is usually short-lived.
WHO BENEFITS FROM TREATMENT WITH BOTULINUM TOXIN?
Anyone who wants to combat signs of aging such as wrinkles and crow’s feet will benefit from botulinum toxin treatments. But younger people also use botulinum toxin as a preventive measure (prophylaxis) to delay the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. We will discuss when it is “time” with you in an individual consultation. Botulinum toxin is also used medically to treat conditions such as migraines, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and muscle spasticity .
