Skin color is created by the skin’s coloring pigment, melanin. Melanin can be further subdivided into eumelanin and pheomelanin.
Eumelanin is brownish black, pheomelanin rather reddish. The mixing ratio determines the individual skin color.
The skin pigments prevent UV rays from penetrating deep into the skin and thus protect it from UV light.

HOW DO PIGMENT SPOTS DEVELOP?
If too much or too little melanin is produced, a pigmentation disorder occurs, which manifests itself in over- or under-pigmentation of the skin. In technical terms, severe pigmentation of the skin is referred to as hyperpigmentation (e.g. age spots or freckles) and weak pigmentation as hypopigmentation (e.g. vitiligo).
A pigmentation disorder can have different causes and is generally attributed to hereditary, hormonal or external influences. External causes include sun exposure, visits to the solarium, cold, cosmetics, certain medications , but also pressure and friction.
While genetic pigmentation disorders can already be seen at a young age, pigmentation disorders caused by hormones or external influences only appear later. For example, during pregnancy, as a side effect of the contraceptive pill or due to age spots as a result of aging skin.
A pigment disorder is harmless in most cases. However, many of those affected suffer greatly from this skin change and then remove their make-up every day, which can be annoying and takes a lot of time.
